Raja Babu
-Review
The film would have managed to find a crowd if only Rajashekar had made it about 3 decades ago.
Just because a film becomes a hit in one language, why do our filmmakers assume that it will work in other languages too? They forget three crucial factors- performance of the stars, the audience’s tastes and nativity element. These are the reasons why most films that are superhits in Malayalam nosedive when they get remade in other languages. There are about a hundred examples for this. ‘Raja Babu’ is the latest addition to the list.
The film is the remake of Malayalam superhit film ‘Balettan’, which had Mohanlal and Devayani in the lead roles.
Rajashekar is Rajababu, a young man who makes a promise to his dying father that he’d take care of his step-mother and her grown-up daughter. His mother herself is not aware of the fact that her dead husband has had a second wife and a daughter with her.
Rajababu has a wife of his own. He has a younger brother too. He doesn’t reveal the secret to them too and soon they start suspecting that there is something fishy about his behavior and activities. But he’d rather suffer the consequences than reveal the truth to them. A few hilarious incidents occur but, as expected, everything gets resolved in the end. By the way, the comedy that we talk about has got nothing to do with the story. Brahmanandam and Kovai Sarala have done a fabulous job with their ‘Chandramukhi’-based comedy.
