      Pournami          -review

Most often, directors come up with fabulous debut films. But, only a handful succeed in following it up with another hit. Unfortunately, Prabhudeva couldn't make it to the list of those rare directors.

When 'Nuvvustanante Nenodantana' became a superhit at the box office, curiosity and expectation about his next film sky-rocketed. The fans had their reasons- the second film too was made by MS Raju, the man who had produced the first one. And, the second film again had Trisha in the lead, like the previous one. Everybody seemed very confident about the film's performance and it was all set to be released on Shankranthi this year. The first sign of nervousness became visibile when the release was postponed.

Finally, the film hit the theatres last week.

Here's the story-

The story begins with a flashback. Decades ago, a tiny village was hit by a severe drought. The village faced acute famine and was on the verge of getting destruction when suddenly a young woman from a much-respected family performs a Bharatnatyam recital in front of a Shiva temple. Soon, miracle happens and it starts to rain in the village. Since then it had become a custom of sorts for a girl from that family to perform a dance recital in front of the village temple on an auspicious full-moon night once every twelve years. The villagers believed that it kept the gods happy.

Finally, it is Trisha's (Pournami) turn to perform the dance recital. There wouldnt have been problems had it not been for the local landlord who has his eyes on her. So, just ahead of the recital, she disappears. Everybody however thinks that she had run away with her lover. But Trisha disguises herself as a gypsy girl and continues to live in the village. Pournami has a younger sister Chandrakala (played by Chaarmi) who continues to live with her step-mother. Since the elder sister had run away, the step mother now plans to gift the younger sister to the landlord.

That is when the hero Prabhas enters. Prabhas is Shivkeshav, a man who comes from the city and rents a portion of the huge zamindar mansion. He loves Elvis Presley and also has plans to start a dance school in the village. He happens to meet Pournami who continues to live in disguise. She falls in love with him (the director fails to convincingly explain how or why). A faction fights breaks out in the village and Pournami dies, trying to save Shivkeshav's life.

Shivkeshav fulfils the last wish of Pournami by making her younger sister Chandrakala dance at the temple festival. He also settles scores with all the baddies. With that, the film ends.

Cast- Prabhas, Trisha, Chaarmi, Rahul Dev, Sindhu Tolani and others

Director- Pabhudeva

Producer- MS Raju

Music- Devi Shriprasad

Prabas, Trisha

Here is a list of all the things that went wrong with the film:

* You could actually see very clearly that the sets were made of cardboards. In some scenes the sets were flapping in the wind!!!

* Trisha's role in not well-sketched

* Most of the roles are not well-sketched

* There are times when you start wondering if Chaarmi is the heroine.

* Sindhu Tolani has nothing to do in the film.

* Music was extremely average

* We still dont like to see our heroines die on the screen!!!
